“I shall not drop my leaves this year”, said the tree
“Well, then, the Queen can be happy with no mating”, buzzed the drone
While the annual in the garden whispered, “I am going to force my flower to bloom forever.”
Hard for us to accept
Tears mark the ends
We search our world to see how we fit
We too have a birth
A life
And a death.
Some learn acceptance
And gratitude
Some rebel
With stubborn denial
Look around
Nothing stays the same
Waves on the sand
Change each grain
Trees blow, leaves fall
Impermanent world
Wishing for more
Makes me sad
My time will come
I hope I can say, “Thank you.”

My husband, John Baccus, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's on January 20, 2020.
John accepted his fate with grace and his usual joy for life. However, as we had discussed many times in our forty-one years of a magical marriage, neither of us wanted to live life in a vegetative state. John was adamant that if his brain was diminished, he wanted to find a way to end his life on his own terms.
It took me two years to find a way to help my husband die.
This is John about a week before he died.
